this is a GREAT TUTORIAL

how to make a lace knitting chart using excel. it would work for cables too. no doubt about it

pic from the tutoral at chez plum

found via craftzine

by the way, i actually do the OPPOSITE. i am making THIS HAT for a friend for christmas (it's PERFECT because he actually has trilobite tattoos). i'm not a big fan of charts. i tend to knit in places other than sitting on my couch (which means i'm out and about somewhere). so i transfer the chart to knitting stitches in excel. you could just use word, or write it on a piece of paper, BUT the grids in excel make it easier to follow for me. instead of a symbol for let's say c2b, i'll actually TYPE OUT c2b in the excel grid box. like i said, it works for ME.

But It'll Scare All My Garden Gnomes Away!: Super Mario Piranha Plant Lawn Ornament

DeviantARTist Kalupsa went and made an incredibly detailed (and frightening) Super Mario Piranha Plant lawn ornament out of modeling clay. And I think we can all agree, it's scary as shit. I sure as hell wouldn't water it, if you know what I mean. I'm talking about try to piss on it. NOT a good idea.....

this plus three others

four giant hand sculptures

the drowned

Designed by Mario Irarrázabal in 1982, Then Drowned was initially built as a warning to sunbathers about the dangers of drowning in Punta del Este, Uruguay, and I can imagine the sculpture definitely keeping people away from the water. The piece of art was so well received by the public that Irarrázabal went on to make hand sculptures in Chile, Venice and Spain.

yoga for crafters

Written by Becky Striepe

Craft show season is getting close, and that means all of you green crafty biz owners are probably working overtime to get merch ready for the upcoming fall shows! Any sort of repetitive action is tough on your body, and crafting is no different. Rather than pop an over the counter pain medication, why not take some time to relax and stretch the soreness away with some yoga poses targeted at the places that take the most abuse?

As with any new exercise, please be cautious and consult your doctor before trying anything too terribly strenuous.

This week we’re taking a look at the aches and pains that come with hours of knitting or crochet. From what you guys had to say on Twitter, it sounds like all that yarn work hits ravelers hardest in the wrists, fingers, neck and chest. Never fear! Here are some poses to help you recoop a little bit..........

look look look at what they might be giants

just put out! how cool does it sound? (in case you don't know the answer to that, let me help you, WICKED COOL)

cory from boing boing turns us on to....

They Might Be Giants' awesome new kids' CD: HERE COMES SCIENCE!

I am thoroughly smitten with the new They Might Be Giants kids' album, Here Comes Science, which ships with a charming DVD of videos and supplementary material. In the best traditions of awesome educational kids music -- Schoolhouse Rock, the Animaniacs, Electric Company -- Here Comes Science combines top-notch pop music with humor that's aimed at both kids and adults (I once heard the creators of Sesame Street discuss how the inclusion of humor targeted at adults meant that grownups were more likely to watch with the kids, and thus be on hand to answer questions and discuss the material; this should be gospel for everyone who makes media for kids). And, of course, the material is great. Better than great. Perfect. This is the album They Might Be Giants was put on Earth to record: they are genuine science nerds, and it shows...............

it was all wrapped up in a purple (my favorite color) bow. i wanted to share it with you since it was so clever
